Tavua Town Council says it would never risk lives amid Garvey Park safety concerns

The Tavua Town Council says they would never imperil the health of anyone's life or limb if they had knowledge of the dangers posed from the use of any of its assets, in this case Garvey Park.

This is after concerns were raised in regards to the safety of students playing over the weekend at Garvey Park in Tavua which was the venue of some of the Vodafone Super Deans quarterfinals as well as the Weetbix Raluve competition, where students were seen digging out large stones from the ground.

While responding to fijivillage News, Acting Council CEO, Sireli Korovulavula says they are also deeply concerned about the discovery of the stone in the centre of the playing field before the start of the games on Saturday.

Korovulavula says the ground has within the last few weeks hosted Kaji Rugby for the Tavua/Vatukoula District and the Western Secondary School League games and there was no indication of the presence of the stone during the two sporting events.

He says in hindsight, they are in total agreement that more vigilance ought to have been taken by the Council and that is what it will do going forward.

Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports, Aliki Bia had raised the alarm early Saturday morning after students were seen digging out large stones from the ground saying this is not good and it does not portray a good image for the development of our rugby.

Bia says the welfare of students and players is paramount.
