Rabuka confirms elections will proceed as planned

Fiji will go to the polls whether or not a new or amended Constitution is in place.

That is the message from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka when asked by the media whether the next General Election will be held under a new or amended Constitution.

Rabuka says the timing of any constitutional amendment will take its own course, but the country will proceed with the election.

He adds that regardless of whether any changes to the electoral provisions are in place, Fiji will still hold the General Election.

Meanwhile, the Constitution Review Commission is now reviewing and analysing the submission received. The Commission must submit its final report and a draft bill to the President by August 31th, 2026.

The campaign period for the 2026 General Elections is now open.

The General Election must be held between 7th August, 2026 and 6th February, 2027.
