Following the recent increase in robberies and assaults against taxi drivers in Wainibokasi, Opposition MP, Vijay Nath has called the Government and the Police to take immediate and decisive action before the situation deteriorates further.
Nath says Police must increase its visibility in crime-prone areas through regular foot patrols, mobile patrols and targeted policing operations, particularly around the Nausori Bus Stand, the mini-bus stand and surrounding areas where these incidents have been reported.
He says Police should also strengthen intelligence gathering, engage closely with taxi associations and business owners, and conduct regular operations to identify and apprehend repeat offenders.
Nath says a visible and proactive police presence will not only deter criminal activity but also restore public confidence that Nausori is a safe place to live, work and do business.
The Opposition MP says authorities must also take firm action against intoxicated people behaving aggressively or threatening taxi drivers and members of the public.
He says these attacks are no longer confined to the late hours of the night.
Nath says many drivers are refusing to operate after 7pm because they no longer feel safe.
He says this is not just a problem for taxi operators and it affects workers trying to get home, students travelling to and from school, families, the elderly, businesses and the wider public who rely on taxis everyday.
Nath adds that when taxi drivers fear for their lives, the entire community suffers.
The Opposition MP says the time for action is now.
Responding to our questions, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Kasiano Vusonilawe says they are doing their best, in line with the resources and capabilities they have, through ongoing investigations and patrols.
Vusonilawe is urging taxi drivers to always take precautionary measures and, if they are suspicious of their passengers, to drive to the nearest Police Station or Community Post.
He adds that, regarding the installation of CCTV cameras, Police do not have the budget to facilitate CCTV coverage in every corner of a central business district, and they need the public's assistance in addressing the issues raised.
