A 52-year-old man who allegedly assaulted his five-year-old niece which resulted in her death has been charged with manslaughter while in another case a 32-year-old man allegedly assaulted his defacto partner with firewood and poured boiling water on her body.
This has been highlighted by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions while providing statistics on serious crime charged filed in the High Court last month where a total of 36 counts of
non-sexual offences were recorded.
According to the ODPP there was a charge of manslaughter, 2 attempted murder, 3 aggravated robbery, 1 aggravated burglary, 3 theft, 4 assault causing actual bodily harm, 5 acts with intent to cause grievous harm , 1 unlawful wounding, 1 serious assault, 2 criminal intimidation, 1 sacrilege, 1 escape from lawful custody, 1 arson, 1 attempt to commit arson, 2 kidnapping, 1 conspiracy to commit unlawful possession of illicit drugs, 1 damaging property, 3 breach of bail, 1 breach of suspended sentence and a breach of DVRO case.
There were 27 people charged with a total of 36 counts of non-sexual offences last month where there were 21 victims.
There were four incidents where the accused and victim were related to one another.
In other cases recorded last month, there was one incident where a 49-year-old man was charged with one count of sacrilege.
It is alleged that the accused broke into a temple and broke prayer idols.
A 45-year-old man was charged with an act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and one count of criminal intimidation for allegedly assaulting and threatening to kill his 39-year-old wife.
There was one incident where a 29-year-old man was charged with an attempt to commit arson and assault causing actual bodily harm for allegedly attempting to set fire to his father’s house.
The man was also charged with one count of breach of the Domestic Violence Restraining Order.
There was one incident where four people were charged with the attempted murder of a 61-year-old man.
The 4 were also charged with damaging property, assault causing actual bodily harm, and the kidnapping of a 20-year-old woman and the 61-year-old man.
The accused persons were initially charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm; however, following a review of the evidence, the charge was upgraded to attempted murder.
In another incident, two men were charged with the attempted murder of 30-year-old man.
The charge against one of the accused person was discontinued due to insufficient evidence.
A 39-year-old man was charged with an act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to a 21-year-old man.
It is alleged that the accused person struck the victim with a piece of timber following an altercation.
In another incident, an 18-year-old man was charged with an act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to his girlfriend’s ex-husband.
It is alleged that the victim was attempting to intervene in an argument between the accused and his ex-wife when the accused punched him and struck him with a piece of timber.
A 19-year-old man was charged with an act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to a 22-year-old man from his village.
It is alleged that the accused was carrying a bottle of benzene, which he ignited, causing flames to spread to the victim’s body and resulting in burns.
In another incident, a 38-year-old man was charged with one count of unlawful wounding of a 48-year-old man where it is alleged that the accused person confronted his sister’s ex-partner and struck him with a cane knife.
In other cases, cash and assorted items were stolen during the alleged aggravated robbery and burglary
incidents consisting of house break-in and daylight robberies.
There was one incident where a 28-year-old and 31-year-old man were charged with one count of aggravated robbery.
It is alleged that the accused boarded a taxi driven by a 67-year-old woman and, during the journey to the city, robbed her of $130 in cash.
There was one incident where a 31-year-old man was charged with one count of criminal intimidation, breach of bail and breach of suspended sentence.
He was also charged with one count of rape.
A 30-year-old man was charged with one count of arson for allegedly setting fire to a village
hall.
The ODPP confirm 3 cases were discontinued due to insufficient evidence and immunity offers.
