Information Minister Lynda Tabuya says the Constitution Review Report will be tabled in a special sitting of Parliament, while the Constitutional Amendment Bill is expected to be tabled during one of the next two parliamentary sittings, with Government targeting the September sitting.
Tabuya says Cabinet discussed the pathway for the Constitution review, noting that a warrant has been issued by the President providing for the report to be tabled in Parliament.
She says the Government wants the report tabled as soon as possible and made available to the public.
Tabuya says the date for the special sitting will be confirmed after information is received from the Secretary-General to Parliament.
She says the Government remains committed to introducing the Constitutional Amendment Bill during the current parliamentary term, with the September sitting being targeted.
Tabuya says once the Constitution Review Report is made public, the Government will be able to determine the timeline for filing the Constitutional Amendment Bill in Parliament.
She says the Bill will go through the full parliamentary process, including the first, second and third readings.
Tabuya also says the public will be given time to consider the Bill, while a special bipartisan parliamentary committee comprising Government and Opposition members will be convened to consider the proposed amendments.
Parliament is scheduled to sit from the 28th of this month to the 3rd of October.
