Cancer support available, but many patients still unregistered
The Fiji Cancer Society is encouraging people to seek information, support and early assistance as cancer cases continue to rise in Fiji.

Patient Support Services Officer Tina Gucake says the society is taking part in Fiji Showcase 2026 to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection and the support services available for patients and their families.

Gucake says members of the public can visit the Fiji Cancer Society booth to learn more about different types of cancer, ask questions and access information that could help save lives.

She says the turnout at Fiji Showcase has been encouraging, with many people visiting the booth to seek information and support.

Gucake also highlighted that while the number of registered cancer patients continues to increase each year, there are many people living with cancer who have not yet registered with the society.

She says stigma remains a major challenge, with some people still afraid to come forward and seek help.

The society is working closely with the Ministry of Health to encourage more cancer patients to register so they can receive support throughout their treatment journey.

Gucake says Fiji Cancer Society is a non-government organisation and relies heavily on donations and fundraising activities to support cancer patients.

She adds that every dollar spent at their booth, including the purchase of merchandise and raffle tickets, goes directly towards assisting cancer patients and their families.

With non-communicable diseases continuing to rise in Fiji, Gucake hopes there will be greater support for cancer and NCD prevention programmes.

She is also encouraging women and anyone affected by cancer to reach out for help, saying the Fiji Cancer Society provides a safe and supportive environment for those seeking guidance and assistance.
