Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru confirms that the post fight medical care and the absence of a dedicated ambulance on site contributed to delay in treatment of the late boxer, Ubayd Haider.

While delivering his ministerial statement in parliament, Saukuru says the tragic loss of Haider remains a matter of national importance, and we owe it to his family, and the boxing community, to state the findings of the Commission of Inquiry.

He says this is to address issues raised that all necessary action is taken to safeguard our athletes.

Saukuru says recognising the seriousness of the incident and its implications, government quickly established a Commission of Inquiry which was mandated to examine any lapses in safety protocols, assess the effectiveness of the medical responses, and recommend improvements to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The Minister says despite delays due to the unavailability of key witnesses, the Commission has concluded its initial investigations.

Saukuru says in light of the Commission’s findings the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Boxing Commission Fiji will implement enhanced medical protocols, and pre-fight MRI or CT scans for fighters in national and international bouts.

He says they will also have post-fight evaluations for all knockouts or TKO outcomes, and an improved ringside emergency preparedness and stricter safety standards for professional boxing.

The Minister says there will be regular compliance audits to align with international best practices as well as medical infrastructure improvements and ambulance availability at all major combat sporting events is a must and will be adhered to very strictly with the presence of trauma specialists or neurosurgeons during high-risk fights should be available as well as the investment in ringside medical equipment and support.

Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma says when taking office the Minister could have addressed the importance of rigorous safety protocols and health assessments of our sporting events.
