Lions flanker Kwagga Smith handed four week ban for dangerous foul
South African referee Jaco Peyper gives a red card to Lions flanker Kwagga Smith.

Lions flanker Kwagga Smith has been banned for four weeks after being sent off during the Super Rugby final defeat by the Crusaders in Johannesburg at the weekend.

The South African got a red card after fouling New Zealander David Havili while he was airborne — one of the most dangerous offences in rugby union.

Smith was dismissed in the 38th minute with the Lions trailing by nine points and they lost 25‑17 after staging a late rally at Ellis Park stadium.

Announcing the ban in a statement, the Super Rugby foul play review committee said the offence could have led to an eight week suspension.

But the good disciplinary record of Smith and his admission of guilt convinced the three‑man committee to impose a lesser sentence.

The ban will prevent Smith playing for the Lions against the Sharks, Western Province, Free State Cheetahs and Pumas in the domestic Currie Cup competition.

Formerly a star in the successful national sevens team, 24‑year‑old Smith became a first‑choice loose forward for the Lions this year.
