Swire Shipping Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson says team selection changes, including the switch at fly-half, are driven by form, experience and tactical balance as the side prepares for its clash against the Western Force tonight.
Jackson says the decision to start Kemu Valetini at fly-half, with Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula named on the bench, is part of a wider plan to balance experience, game management and tactical execution.
He says Valetini offers a strong kicking game and brings valuable experience in territorial play, which will be important against an Australian side known for applying pressure through field position.
Jackson also praised Armstrong-Ravula, saying the young playmaker has been outstanding for the Drua despite a heavy workload across Super Rugby and international duties.
He says the 21-year-old remains a key part of the team’s long-term plans and is expected to make a strong impact when introduced from the bench.
The Drua coach says recent selection decisions have also been influenced by form and momentum, pointing to the side’s strong second-half response in their previous match after early changes were made.
Jackson says rewarding players who respond well off the bench is crucial for maintaining confidence and driving internal competition within the squad.
He also confirmed adjustments in the forward pack, including the decision to settle a player previously used in multiple roles into a permanent position at loose-head prop, ruling him out of hooker cover.
Jackson says injuries have also forced changes to the squad structure, with several players unavailable and others managing heavy workloads across the season.
He adds that squad rotation remains essential given the demands of the competition, particularly with back-to-back travel and physical matches.
Jackson also highlighted the return of prop Meli Tuni, who is set to start after recovering from a long-term knee injury.
He describes Tuni as a committed squad member since day one and said his return to full fitness is a major boost for the team.
The Drua face the Western Force tonight in Perth at 9.35pm.
In other games, the Reds will face Moana Pasifika at 4.35pm, while the Hurricanes will take on the Highlanders at 7.05pm.
