Springbok coach Allister Coetzee has given up on winning the Rugby Championship and admitted that his side is playing for second place, even though mathematically the race is still on.
The All Blacks top the standings on 19 points after four rounds, with the Springboks eight points adrift.
To have any chance of winning the title, the Springboks would need to gain maximum points from their remaining two matches — against Australia and New Zealand.
South Africa would also need the All Blacks to take no more than one point from their two remaining fixtures, which includes this weekend’s clash against Argentina in Buenos Aires.
But the Springboks coach has conceded the title while there was still a faint chance of success.
South Africa lost 57‑0 to the All Blacks two weeks ago.
South Africa will meet Australia at 3.05am Sunday while Argentina will take on the All Blacks at 10.40am Sunday.
