Xabi Alonso scored the first goal for Spain through a penalty kick after Diego Costa was fouled inside the penalty box by a Netherlands player.
Netherlands equalised just before half time through a sensational diving header by their captain, Robin van Persie.
Veteran, Arjen Robben increased Holland’s lead by 2-1 in the 53rd minute when he went past two defenders and even the Spain goalkeeper to score.
Manchester United striker, Robin van Persie scored again in the 72nd minute while two more goals were scored by Robin and De Vrij.
The only time Spain has conceded more than three goals in a World Cup game was in 1950 when they lost 6-1 to Brazil.
Top striker, Robin van Persie praised Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal for masterminding the team's crushing win over reigning world champions Spain.
Van Persie said the emphatic win was down to the tactics of Van Gaal, his new manager at Manchester United.
He said “for the whole Netherlands, this is a dream come true.”
Meanwhile, Chile defeated Australia 3-1 a while ago in another group B match.
In a match played earlier today, Mexico defeated Cameroon 1-nil.
In tomorrow’s matches, Columbia will play Greece at 4am, Uruguay will play Costa Rica at 7am, England will take on Italy at 10am and Ivory Coast will face Japan at 1pm
