The All Blacks have beaten Argentina 33-15, scoring the crucial bonus point with a big second half at La Plata.
It was a tight contest early on with the New Zealanders leading only 11-9 at halftime, a 60-metre try to wing Julian Savea the only five pointer.
But three tries to the All Blacks after the break got the visitors home.
Openside flanker Sam Cane crossed once and Ben Smith twice, including the fourth try and the bonus point with a minute to go.
Aaron Cruden kicked one conversion and three penalties while substitute first-five Beauden Barrett converted Smith's late try.
The fourth try puts the All Blacks five points clear of the Springboks ahead of the two team's meeting at Ellis Park next week.
South Africa now must beat New Zealand with four tries or more while also denying their hosts a losing bonus-point.
Meanwhile, a storming opening half hour created the platform for South Africa’s 28-8 win over Australia in an ill-tempered Rugby Championship match this morning.
The match flared up several times with four yellow cards issued, two each to both side.
