Elderly couple devastated after Suva home broken into three times within four days

Elderly couple devastated after Suva home broken into three times within four days
An elderly couple say they returned to Fiji from overseas after being told their Cumming Street, Suva home had been broken into three times within four days, and were devastated to find their home ransacked.

The couple, who have asked not to be named, say they were overseas when they started receiving information that people had entered their home and stolen a number of items.

They say the first break-in happened last weekend before the intruders returned twice over the following days.

The couple say the intruders gained access from the Terry Walk side of the property and climbed two storeys along the exterior of the building to reach the home.

They say structural pipes and louvres were damaged in the process, while a door was also damaged.

The residents say boxes of ghee, liquor and other kitchen and household items were stolen.

They say the intruders also attempted to take heavy items, including LPG gas cylinders and a microwave, which they say were wrapped in bedsheets and left behind.

The residents believe the items may have been left there to be collected later.

They say their caretaker reinforced the entry points and moved items following the incidents.

One of the residents says this is the first time they have experienced something like this at the property in about 70 years.

He says returning to see the condition of their home has been extremely difficult, particularly for his wife, who has been badly affected by what happened.

The family has also raised concerns for relatives who are expected to return to the property this Sunday, saying they fear for their safety.

The residents say the frequency of the break-ins has left them concerned that future incidents could result in confrontations, serious injuries or loss of life if the security situation is not addressed.

They have also raised concerns about the lack of lighting along Terry Walk behind their building.

They say they had repeatedly contacted the Suva City Council asking for a streetlight behind the property to be fixed and for an overgrown guava tree close to the building to be cut.

They believe the tree may have been used to gain access to the upper level of the building.

The resident says the area becomes very dark at night and believes better lighting could improve security for people living and working in the area.

The residents have also raised concerns about alleged drug-related activity along Terry Walk, particularly near the EFL substation, and are calling for greater Police presence in the area.

They are also calling for increased CCTV coverage in the Suva CBD, saying this could assist authorities in identifying and tracking people involved in criminal activity.

The residents say three break-ins at the same property within four days have heightened their concerns about security and they want immediate and visible action to improve safety in the area.

The couple say Police visited the property earlier today to inspect the scene and were expected to return for further investigations.

They are calling for stronger security measures and greater attention to safety concerns in the area.

fijivillage News has contacted the Fiji Police Force and Suva City Council for comments on the break-ins, the alleged drug-related activity, lighting and security concerns raised by the residents.
