A strong sewage stench along Tomanu Road in Nadera is raising concerns for residents, with the Nasinu Town Council confirming that sewage from a burst sewer line has been entering a roadside drain.
Nasinu Town Council CEO Felix Magnus says the Council inspected the site on the 14th of last month, after receiving a complaint from a resident.
Magnus confirms that the liquid is sewage.
Speaking to fijivillage News, Nasinu resident Ashwani Kumar says the smell is extremely strong and unpleasant, causing significant discomfort and concern in the area.
Kumar says the purplish-brown liquid appears to be entering the drain from somewhere nearby, rather than coming from the drain itself.
He says the source of the discharge should be investigated to determine whether it poses any health or environmental risks to people living and travelling in the area.
When asked whether the Nasinu Town Council is taking any action on the matter, Magnus says the Council was advised that the Water Authority of Fiji had rectified the sewer line on 13th August, but it burst again.
He says the Council referred the matter to WAF, as the sewer line is an asset of WAF.
He says all sewer-related complaints are referred to WAF.
When questioned, WAF says they will visit the site and reconfirm the situation.
