Only COI expenditure to be tabled in Parliament, not report - Rabuka

There is no need for the Commission of Inquiry (COI) report to be tabled in Parliament because it was commissioned by the President and is to be submitted to the Head of State.

Responding to questions from the media about the release of the report, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says only the expenditure relating to the Commission of Inquiry will need to be presented to Parliament as part of the Government's financial reporting.

Rabuka says any action arising from the report will be carried out by the Office of the Prime Minister, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) and the Fiji Police Force.

Rabuka says the public has a right to know how much public money was spent on the inquiry and to be informed of its findings and recommendations.

He says the report's recommendations will be referred to the relevant authorities, with the Police forwarding matters to the DPP where necessary, while FICAC would deal with cases that fall within its jurisdiction.

Rabuka also said the inquiry had provided clarity for those who had come under suspicion.

He says at least those people who have been suspected of doing wrong now know that they didn't do anything wrong.

He acknowledged that significant public funds had been spent on the inquiry but says such expenditure was necessary to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law.
