A call has been addressed to the Lau Provincial Council for stronger governance and accountability over millions of dollars in funding available for Lau, with concerns that too much discussion has taken place over the years without enough action.
Speaking during the Lau Provincial Council meeting, Turaga na Tui Nayau, Sau ni Vanua ko Lau, Tui Lau Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara says the province has the resources to drive its own development, but those resources must be managed properly and used for the benefit of the people.
Ratu Tevita says Lau has a proven history of successful business ventures, recalling that the Provincial Council acquired its first boat through proceeds from the coconut industry, which also played a major role in boosting the province's finances and helping repay outstanding debts.
He says the coconut industry still holds enormous potential because of the strong demand for coconut products in Fiji and could significantly grow Lau's economy.
Ratu Tevita questioned the continued need for provincial levy contributions, saying there are millions of dollars available to the province.
He says the same issues surrounding funding are raised at almost every Provincial Council meeting, but little progress has been made.
Ratu Tevita welcomed the Fiji Development Bank's willingness to safeguard the province's funds and support business growth and development, saying the responsibility now rests with the people of Lau to make the most of the opportunities available.
He also highlighted the funding available through Conservation International Fiji, referring to about $24 million and $11 million, saying the province has access to significant financial resources that should be invested wisely.
Ratu Tevita says the amount of funding available is substantial and stressed it should be used to create lasting development for the province rather than remain idle.
He also raised concerns that the Lau Provincial Council continues to carry debts despite the resources available.
Ratu Tevita called for a proper governance structure and stronger oversight to ensure the available funding is well managed, transparent and delivers real benefits to the people of Lau.
He also acknowledged the Fiji Government's continued support, thanking it for contributing about $33 million in funding and assistance towards the development of Lau Province.
