Late Pandit Totaram Sanadhya formally recognised as pioneer of Sanatan Dharm movement in Fiji
Late Pandit Totaram Sanadhya has been formally recognised as the first person to initiate and organise the Sanatan Dharm movement in Fiji, following a historic resolution unanimously endorsed during the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji’s National Delegates Conference in Suva.

National Secretary, Pandit Krishneel Tiwari says the decision is significant because it formally places Pandit Totaram Sanadhya’s contribution at the foundation of the organised Sanatan Dharm movement in Fiji and will ensure his role is preserved for future generations.

Pandit Totaram Sanadhya, who lived from 1876 to 1947, was born in Hirangaon, Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, and arrived in Fiji during the Girmit era, becoming one of the most influential religious leaders, social reformers and advocates for the rights and welfare of the Indian community.

He is widely known for his pioneering religious work, his campaign against the indenture system and for authoring the historic book My Twenty-One Years in the Fiji Islands.

Tiwari says the National Delegates Conference acknowledged that Pandit Totaram Sanadhya played a pivotal role in preserving and strengthening the Hindu faith among the Girmitiyas and their descendants.

He says at a time when Indian labourers faced immense hardships under the indenture system, he provided spiritual guidance and organised religious activities that helped sustain the cultural and religious identity of the community.

He says Sanatan Dharm first arrived in Fiji in 1879 with the arrival of the first indentured labourers, and despite the difficult living and working conditions, the early migrants found comfort and strength through the recitation of sacred scriptures, particularly the Ramcharitmanas, or Ramayan.

Tiwari says religious gatherings became an important source of unity, hope and cultural preservation.

He says Pandit Totaram Sanadhya significantly contributed to the growth of Sanatan Dharm in Fiji by introducing and promoting religious texts and practices, including the Ramcharitmanas, Satyanarayan Katha and other sacred Hindu scriptures.

He says through his leadership, the recitation of the Ramayan became widespread throughout Fiji, inspiring communities to establish regular satsangs, mandalis and religious gatherings.

He adds that his efforts laid the foundation for the organised Sanatan movement that continued to grow across the country.

Tiwari says the Sanatan movement eventually culminated in the establishment of the Akhil Fiji Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha in 1958, which was later renamed the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji under the leadership of its first National President, late Pandit Shreedhar Maharaj, together with other founding fathers of the organisation.

He says as part of the new recognition, Pandit Totaram Sanadhya’s photograph and legacy will be formally incorporated into its official documents, publications, educational materials and historical records.

He adds that the initiative aims to ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the significant role he played in preserving and advancing Sanatan Dharm in Fiji.

The Sabha has also announced major celebrations, including 147 Years of Sanatan Dharm in Fiji and its 65th Sanatan Convention.

The 65th Sanatan Convention will be held at King Charles Park in Nadi during the 2027 Easter weekend, from 25th to 29th March.

The Sabha is inviting members of the community to join in honouring the legacy of late Pandit Totaram Sanadhya and participate in the celebrations as it continues its mission of preserving and promoting Sanatan Dharm for future generations.
