Fiji will this year be commemorating 40 years of its peacekeeping duties with the United Nations.

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Defense Osea Cawaru has highlighted that with the theme 'Fiji's Sacrifice for Global Peace', the commemoration will be the first of its kind to remember those who have served not only in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon but in peacekeeping deployments around the globe.

Cawaru says the week‑long commemoration will be held in all centres around the country and will begin with a church service this Sunday, at the Centenary Church in Suva including the two centres in Labasa and Lautoka.

He adds that the decision behind the church service was significant as it also marks the date the first contingent that had departed our shores for Lebanon attended a farewell church service on the same date at the Centenary Church.

Fiji has been participating with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon since June 1978.
