The mother of six-year-old Misthi Singh is calling for stronger action against those responsible after her daughter suffered a fractured right femur during a Physical Education class at Labasa Sangam Primary School on 4th June.

Kartika Chand informed fijivillage News that she wants the school to accept responsibility and is urging the Ministry of Education to provide its findings from the investigation in writing.

She is also calling for disciplinary action against the teachers involved, saying a written warning is not sufficient.

Chand says her daughter and family has suffered financially, physically, mentally and emotionally.

She says Misthi was hospitalised for about six weeks, undergoing repeated X-rays, orthopaedic reviews, pain management and physiotherapy assessments.

According to Chand, the family has relocated to Suva so her daughter can receive specialist paediatric orthopaedic care for the next year, and Misthi is currently unable to attend school.

Chand says she was initially informed by her daughter's class teacher that Misthi had been injured, but the seriousness of the injury was not explained.

She says the Ministry of Education advised her that the investigation was confidential and no written report would be provided.

She says as a parent she has the rights to know what transpired that day.

The family also lodged a police complaint on 15th June.

Chand says they are seeking accountability to ensure no other child or family has to go through the same.

We have sent questions to the Ministry of Education.

They are yet to respond.
