Victoria rolls out free public transport for April amid rising fuel costs

Public transport will be free across Victoria, Australia in April in a bid to relieve cost-of-living pressures.

The measure, which the government estimates will cost $70 million, comes as fuel costs continue to rise due to supply shocks in the Middle East, driving up prices on everyday goods.

All public transport across metropolitan and V/Line services will be free from tomorrow until April 30th.

Premier Jacinta Allan says it is a temporary measure that will help Victorian families and households right now and take pressure off demand at the petrol pump.

She says she is aware the move will not solve cost-of-living problems but is an immediate step within her power.

Allan has also confirmed that no extra train, tram or bus services have been allocated yet, but traveller numbers will be monitored.

Public and Active Transport Minister, Gabrielle Williams says train station ticket barriers will be open throughout the free travel period, meaning passengers will not need to tap on or off.

She adds that if people accidentally tap on, there will be a zero charge coded into the system.

She is also advising Victorians who rely on V-Line coach services to continue booking as usual to help manage demand.

Passengers who have already paid for a yearly Myki pass are being told to contact the Transport Victoria call centre to pause it or request a refund.

Williams has also confirmed that a current trial for ticketless tap-and-go technology will be paused during April and will resume later.

No public transport station staff will be stood down during the free travel period.
