Team Samoa exceeds expectations at Oceania Swim Championships

Team Samoa has delivered beyond expectations at the Oceania Swimming Championships in Fiji, with Head Coach Brandon Schuster praising both the resilience and leadership shown by his swimmers throughout the competition.

Speaking to fijivillage Sports, Schuster said Samoa entered the championships with high standards for its athletes, but once again the team managed to raise the bar with impressive performances in both the heats and finals.

He said several junior swimmers stepped up on the big stage, while senior athletes embraced leadership roles within the squad, helping to guide and motivate the team through the competition.

Schuster acknowledged that getting to Fiji was not without its challenges, saying travel across the Pacific is never easy, particularly with some swimmers travelling in from New Zealand and Australia, while others were also adjusting to a new pool environment and time zone differences.

He said for many athletes, it was also their first open competition and their first time representing Samoa, making their strong showing even more commendable.

Schuster said despite those hurdles, Samoa’s swimmers showed perseverance and mental strength, particularly on the opening day, which he described as one of the toughest parts of any major meet.

A former Samoa representative swimmer himself, Schuster said returning to Fiji for competition feels like coming home, having competed in Fiji many times during his 12-year swimming career.

He added that while there is always fierce rivalry between Fiji, Samoa and other Pacific nations in the pool, the Oceania championships continue to foster a spirit of unity, describing the region as a family where every nation pushes each other to be better.
