Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change Lynda Tabuya marked Girmit Day in Nakasi by joining residents and youth groups in a community clean-up, clearing litter and cleaning drains alongside Permanent Secretary Environment and Climate Change Dr. Sivendra Michael, Ministry staff and volunteers.
Eco-friendly bags, gloves and sanitizers were distributed during the initiative, while youths were also encouraged to join the Return and Earn Initiative to turn cans and bottles into cash while helping keep Fiji clean.
Tabuya says the unity shown during the clean-up reflected the resilience and collective spirit of the Girmitiyas, adding that young people are already leading by example in caring for their communities.
The clean-up and youth discussions on life after volleyball and rugby were led by the Genesis Volleyball Club and Nakasi Rugby Youth, joined by around 10 youth clubs and local residents.
