Students of Vatukoula Convent Primary School in the Western Division have commemorated World Water Day 2026, despite earlier disruptions caused by adverse weather, While the global event is observed on March 22, the school was forced to cancel its initial plans last month as severe weather conditions led to school closures across Fiji.
The celebration was successfully celebrated, with students and teachers welcoming the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ratu Atonio Rabici Lalabalavu, as chief guest.
School management says the event aimed to raise awareness on the importance of water and encourage students to value and protect this vital resource.
World Water Day highlights the need for safe and clean drinking water, which remains a key issue in many communities, especially during natural disasters such as floods and cyclones that can contaminate water sources.
Teachers also used the opportunity to educate students on simple but important practices such as conserving water, avoiding wastage, and maintaining proper hygiene to prevent waterborne diseases.
The Ministry of Health continues to stress that access to clean water is essential for good health, as unsafe water can lead to illnesses like diarrhoea, typhoid, and leptospirosis.
Students took part in activities and awareness programs, reinforcing the message that everyone has a role to play in protecting water resources for future generations.
