Government can establish sound laws, policies and minimum employment standards, but it is the quality of leadership in our workplaces that transforms these protections into positive everyday experiences for workers.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh during a talanoa session with teachers in Taveuni.

Singh stressed that legislation and policy alone cannot deliver meaningful improvements without strong and innovative leadership in the workplace.

He says innovative leadership is not only about technology or introducing new systems, but also about creating a culture of trust, encouraging new ideas, supporting workers' wellbeing, investing in skills development, and leading with empathy, accountability and integrity.

He says organisations that place workers at the centre of decision-making are more likely to achieve higher productivity, improved staff retention, stronger workplace relationships and sustainable growth.

During the interactive session, teachers discussed a range of employment-related issues, including the minimum terms and conditions of employment, workers' rights, occupational safety and health, and Government initiatives.

The Minister also encouraged school management, employers and managers to adopt modern leadership approaches that promote collaboration, continuous learning, effective communication and workplace wellbeing.

He highlighted the Ministry's ongoing efforts to strengthen Fiji's labour market through the review of employment laws, including the National Minimum Wage and sectoral wages, enhanced workplace compliance, safer working environments, employment creation initiatives and productivity improvement programmes.

He also acknowledged the important role teachers play in shaping Fiji's future workforce, saying they are nurturing the future leaders, innovators and workers who will drive the country's economic and social development.
