Relief for Ovalau residents as Sinu-i-Wasa Tolu dismantling starts

The dismantling of the derelict passenger vessel Sinu-i-Wasa Tolu, which has been grounded at Toki on Ovalau since 2016, has begun, according to its owner, businessman Ben Naidu.

Naidu made this announcement during the Fijian Media Association Levuka Town Hall Forum in Levuka, where concerns were again raised about the abandoned vessel.

Naidu confirms that work has commenced.

The announcement is expected to bring relief to residents of Toki and nearby communities, who have for years expressed concern over the deteriorating vessel.

Residents have raised fears that the ship contains hazardous materials, including diesel residue, industrial batteries and potential asbestos, posing environmental and public health risks.

The condition of the vessel has also been a longstanding concern because of its visual impact on the coastline and the potential danger it presents if left to deteriorate further.
