With thousands of children enjoying their school holidays, naturopath and nutritionist Barbara O'Neill is calling on parents and guardians to have rules regarding technology use in their homes.

While speaking on fijivillage Straight Talk with Vijay Narayan, O’Neill highlighted that there should be clear guidelines on when children should use technology.

She also highlighted the importance of family time in children’s lives and says it is a pity that so many parents overwork.

She is calling on parents to stop and spend time with their children.

Former President of the Fiji College of General Practitioners, Doctor Rajesh Maharaj, believes that the breakdown of family values and the family unit is a huge contributor to stress and mental health problems in Fiji.

He says this leads to marriage breakdown, divorce, gender-based violence, domestic violence, and child abuse.

Dr Maharaj says that to help mould a child’s attitude, family meetings should be held regularly and parents should be taught good parenting skills.

He stresses that nowadays, simple misunderstandings can result in family breakdown and marriage problems.

He says children need to be encouraged to assist their parents from an early age and that parents should not be overprotective or do everything on their own.

Dr Maharaj says when children are left to play video games and do their own things, they do not learn responsibility.
