Constitution Review Commission Chairman, Sevuloni Valenitabua states that they have received suggestions from many people that Fiji is to do away with the one single constituency electoral system for the general elections, and that we should have multiple constituencies like the past, so that people can hold the MPs elected from their areas accountable.
While speaking during a fijivillage Straight Talk session, Valenitabua says they are considering or hearing that Fiji should go back to the multiple constituency system.
While responding to questions, Commission member, Doctor Neelesh Goundar says if they recommend changes to the electoral system in the constitution, the Electoral Act would also have to be reviewed and changed.
They maintain that at the moment, they are not clear on what system will be recommended, and this will be decided after receiving all the submissions.
When asked on the general elections between August this year and February next year, Doctor Gounder says voter education and awareness will be the key, and the government will need to have a massive awareness campaign.
When asked on whether we will have a different electoral system, Valenitabua said probably.
