Despite repeated concerns about the growing number of illegal taxis known as 'Pari', no real action is being taken to address these illegal operations and the Land Transport Authority has not responded to questions sent by fijivillage News last Wednesday.
Some taxi drivers have also told us that they have returned their taxis to the owners because they are unable to earn enough income to support their families and meet their daily expenses.
They say they are receiving no support from the Government.
Nausori Taxi Association Secretary, Rup Narayan says many drivers and their families are suffering as illegal operators continue to take away business from licensed taxis.
While responding to questions from fijivillage News, Minister for Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau says the issue has been raised on several occasions.
Ro Filipe says there is a need to analyse taxi operations in various areas.
He says the Government has now opened taxi permit application quotas for specific sectors.
The Minister adds that this initiative is expected to reduce the number of illegal operators, and he is encouraging them to apply for the permits.
