The legal timeframe for the issuance of the Writ of Elections starts today based on the current term of parliament, and this means that the earliest date that the general elections can be held is August 7th this year.
According to the law, the Prime Minister advises the President on when the Writ of Elections would be issued.
Based on the legal timeframe, the last date for the issuance of the writ is December 24th this year.
If that happens, then the last date to have general elections is February 6th next year
When the writ is issued, voter registrations and registration of new political parties stop.
Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa calls on all eligible voters to come forward and register as a voter if you have not done that as yet.
She says for those registering as a voter for the first time, all they have to do is bring their valid photo ID and their original or certified birth certificate.
Once you have your voter card, that card does not expire, and you do not need to get a new voter card for every election.
Mataiciwa is also urging those that may have moved and their address has changed, to update their details.
She is also urging all Fijians to not only get registered, but to go to the polling venue and vote during the general elections when it happens.
