Questions are been raised about the risk of potential evidence tampering as Minister for Sports, Jese Saukuru remains in office while allegations against him are set to be independently investigated.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka told fijivillage News that the responsibility rests with the Minister, saying that in previous instances, including investigations into immigration matters under the Defence portfolio, the minister concerned, Pio Tikoduadua had voluntarily stepped aside to allow inquiries to proceed without hindrance; however, that has not occurred in this case.

Rabuka says Saukuru is currently on an official tour of the Yasawa Islands and Kadavu, meeting communities in rural areas, and he does not want to interfere as villagers are looking forward to seeing him.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has confirmed that he has asked the Solicitor General to advise on the most suitable person or persons to lead an independent investigation into allegations involving Saukuru.

He says the investigation will have two components, one focusing on allegations of misuse of funds within the Youth and Sports portfolio, and the other examining claims relating to Saukuru’s trip to New Zealand, including concerns over the contra-crediting of his wife’s travel expenses.

He declined to comment further on the specifics of the allegations, saying investigators should be allowed to carry out their work independently.

Addressing concerns about urgency, Rabuka acknowledged that questions have been raised about funds allocated to the Ministry that may not have been properly accounted for.

He emphasised that the investigation will ensure fairness for both ministry officials responsible for administration and those raising concerns from outside.

The timeline for the commencement of the investigation will depend on the Solicitor General’s advice regarding the appointment of independent investigators.
