Drug threat in Fiji’s villages ignored at community meetings - Namara villager

The growing threat of drugs in Fiji’s villages is being ignored in community meetings.

These were the words of Eroni Daunibau who says there is an urgent need for awareness programs and stronger action to protect children and families.

Daunibau says he strongly opposes the presence of drugs and wants his children and families to be safe.

He says drugs are already affecting the lives, faith, and cultural values of people in the community, and village leaders have yet to set rules or consequences for those found with drugs.

The Naisausau, Namara, Tailevu, man says the struggles of children in urban settlements, many of whom are exposed to theft, mischief, and peer pressure after their parents have moved to the city for work or education.

He says many young people do not understand the sacrifices made by their parents and grandparents, leaving them vulnerable to negative influences.

Daunibau believes that raising awareness can help restore guidance, values, and stability in people's lives.

He says no one can deny the presence of drugs in our communities, and if nothing is done, both our children and culture will be at risk.

Daunibau adds that protecting Fiji’s youth requires urgent action—both in villages and urban settlements—through awareness and strong leadership.
