The redevelopment of the former Westin resort on Denarau Island into the JW Marriott Fiji Resort & Spa is expected to contribute to Fiji's economy through employment opportunities, local procurement, business partnerships and tourism expenditure.

The Fiji National Provident Fund says the development is also expected to strengthen Fiji's luxury accommodation offering and support the country's ability to attract higher-value international visitors.

The resort will feature 282 rooms and is expected to open in the first quarter of 2027, with reservations anticipated to commence in December 2026.

FNPF has welcomed the signing of an agreement between its subsidiary, Dubbo Pte Ltd, and Marriott International to introduce the JW Marriott brand to Fiji.

FNPF says it recognises the important role tourism plays in the Fijian economy and views its hospitality investments as both commercial assets and contributors to broader economic development.

Through the redevelopment, the Fund aims to support Fiji's position as a leading Pacific tourism destination while ensuring its investment decisions remain commercially sound and focused on members' interests.

FNPF Chief Executive Officer Viliame Vodonaivalu says the development reflects the Fund's commitment to making investment decisions that deliver lasting value to members.

Vodonaivalu says every investment decision is centred on creating long-term value for the people of Fiji.

He says the introduction of JW Marriott represents a significant milestone for one of FNPF's key tourism assets, with the focus on ensuring that the substantial investment being made in the property translates into a stronger, more competitive asset capable of generating sustainable returns for members over the long term.

Vodonaivalu says this is about more than redeveloping a hotel, as it also involves protecting and enhancing the value of an important investment held on behalf of members while ensuring the property remains relevant and competitive for decades to come.

The redevelopment involves the comprehensive transformation of the former Regent Hotel, originally constructed in 1975 and subsequently rebranded as the Westin in the late 1980s.

FNPF says that, given the age and historical significance of the property, the redevelopment has required extensive modernisation of its infrastructure, accommodation, facilities and guest amenities while preserving elements of its distinctive character.

As the project progressed, the Fund undertook a broader assessment of the property's long-term market positioning, including opportunities to enhance the guest experience and strengthen its competitiveness against new and upgraded resorts entering the Fiji tourism market.

This resulted in additional enhancements to the original redevelopment scope, with a focus on creating a higher-quality hospitality asset capable of meeting the expectations of premium international travellers.

The expanded scope has extended the anticipated completion of redevelopment works to the end of 2026.

FNPF says the decision to introduce the JW Marriott brand reflects a strategy to align the property's market positioning with the scale and quality of the investment undertaken.

The brand conversion is expected to provide the resort with stronger differentiation within the Denarau hospitality market, access to an established international luxury customer base and opportunities to enhance room rates, revenue generation and long-term investment performance.

Vodonaivalu says the Fund has taken a long-term view in assessing the redevelopment and the opportunities presented by the brand conversion.

He says that with an asset of this significance, it is important that FNPF does not simply restore what existed previously but positions the property to compete successfully in the market of tomorrow.

He says the transition to JW Marriott allows FNPF to elevate the resort into the luxury segment and better align its market positioning with the investment undertaken.

Vodonaivalu says a stronger-performing hotel ultimately supports the value of the Fund's investment portfolio and its ability to deliver sustainable returns to members.

FNPF says it remains committed to delivering a high-quality hospitality asset that will strengthen its investment portfolio and create lasting value for its members.
