Fiji has received $12.6 million for the procurement of necessary road work materials as the Japanese Government formalised the Japanese grant assistance under the Economic and Social Development Programme today.

According to the Counsellor and Head of Mission for the Embassy of Japan, Isami Takada, the procured materials will include excavators, wheel loaders, dump trucks, motor graders, crane trucks and loaders.

He says the Japanese procurement agency will work with the Ministry to procure the right equipment that meets the expectations and requirements of the Ministry.

He adds that today’s exchange of notes ceremony marks a significant step forward in our shared commitment to strengthening Fiji's national infrastructure and fostering sustainable economic growth.

Takada says he understands that the usage of these new machines will be directed towards the construction and maintenance of all-weather access roads in remote provinces.

Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau has acknowledged the people and the Government of Japan for the assistance and says this relationship goes back a long way, not only in terms of development assistance, but also in terms of cultural and social understanding.

He says the assistance will greatly enhance their capacity in facilitating the construction of new roads, as well as repair and maintenance works.

Ro Filipe says the work needs to progress with experienced and qualified personnel, and that this remains an ongoing challenge.

He adds that Fiji is grateful that the Government of Japan will continue with capacity building, upgrading the skills and qualifications of local staff.
