What is happening to the fire-damaged sites at old CWM Birthing Unit and Gokal’s warehouse?

A few months after two major fires on Amy Street in Suva, concerns are being raised that the fire-damaged sites remain unsafe, unattended, and an eyesore despite being taped off.

The old CWM Hospital Birthing Unit, located opposite the CWM Hospital morgue, was destroyed in a fire on 7th June.

National Fire Authority CEO Puamau Sowane confirmed that the fire was deliberately set.

Just over a month later, on 26th July, a massive fire gutted the Gokal’s warehouse, causing an estimated $8 million in damage.

The NFA had mentioned that gaining access to the warehouse was a major challenge, as the roller shutters were locked, and firefighters had to use bolt cutters and crowbars to create an entry point before tackling the flames from inside.

They laid out feeder lines from a nearby hydrant, but low water pressure quickly became another obstacle.

The NFA also highlighted the lack of early fire warning systems, saying that the Gokal Group had not installed the NFA’s Alarm Signalling Equipment, which alerts firefighters to smoke or heat in real time.

The cause of the Gokal’s fire has not yet been officially confirmed.

We are still awaiting a response from NFA.

Questions have been sent to the NFA on what steps will be taken to address public safety and whether there are plans for site clearance or inspections.
