Aspen Medical has welcomed a team of renowned gynaecologists who performed surgeries and also conducted a workshop on laparoscopy which is a procedure that allows surgeons to examine the pelvis, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and the uterus using a laparoscope - a thin telescope equipped with a camera and light.
Aspen Medical says they have restarted minimally invasive gynaecological laparoscopy services at Lautoka Hospital which is being carried out on a case-by-case basis.
They say six clinicians from the Lautoka Hospital worked with three visiting specialists to carry out 12 gynaecological laparoscopy surgeries over two days.
Doctor Tema Rasoki-Windust, a visiting specialist, says they are returning to Fiji for the third time in twelve months to carry out surgeries and treatment through minimally invasive procedures.
She says they are collaborating with colleagues from urogynaecology to address pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence surgeries.
Aspen Medical’s Chief Operations Officer in Fiji, Barry Herberts says Lautoka Hospital previously offered laparoscopy services but it has been unavailable due to resource constraints for over a decade.
He says their goal is to offer regular laparoscopy services at the hospitals within the next few years.
Meanwhile, general surgeons at the Lautoka campus have already begun performing a minimally invasive surgical procedure for gallbladder removal and the gynaecology team will continue to lead the way in expanding the availability of minimally invasive surgeries.
