There are 23 Pacific Island territories and each one is highly prone to natural disasters.
These were part of the findings of Professor Satish Chand who teaches at the University of New South Wales and has released a paper on Economic Impacts and Implications of Climate Change in the Pacific , while he was speaking at the 2018 Pacific Update Conference at the University of the South Pacific.
Chand pointed out how Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama has been very vocal on the global stage for Pacific Islanders in terms of the impact of climate change.
Chand says the Prime Minister is correct in saying that Pacific Islanders live on the front line of climate change.
He says climate change poses a threat to many Pacific communities and a single adverse weather event has the potential to wipe of an entire community.
He says USP as a regional institute with research expertise in both the sciences and social sciences has a role to play in data collection , analysis and advocacy on the impact of climate changes in the Pacific.
