More enforcement should be given to agencies such as the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji to deal with shipping operators, who abandon their vessels at Suva Harbour to ensure greater accountability among shipowners.

This was shared by the Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau.

Ro Filipe states that penalties for non-compliant ship operators must be enforced, and such measures will be applied accordingly.

He says MSAF is currently reviewing its legislation—as well as related laws and operational systems—to strengthen enforcement mechanisms in response to the growing issue of derelict ships.

Ro Filipe also stressed the importance of requiring shipwreck insurance to address the financial and environmental risks posed by abandoned vessels.

The Minister added that he is working closely with MSAF, the Fiji Boat Operators, and various other committees to facilitate the removal and cleanup of the remaining abandoned vessels in Suva Harbour.
