State will not appeal court’s decision to acquit Bala - Pryde
Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde has decided that the state will not appeal the court’s decision to acquit Local Government and Infrastructure Minister, Parveen Bala.

Pryde says the DPP's Office reviewed the ruling by the Magistrate in Bala's case and has accepted the decision of the Magistrate to acquit Bala.

Bala was charged with one count of dangerous driving occasioning death. It was alleged that Bala had driven a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner that caused the death of Puna Chand in Lautoka in 2013.

In a written ruling handed down on the 22nd of last month, the Lautoka Magistrates Court acquitted Bala of the charge.

Pryde says although there are areas of disagreement with the ruling by the Magistrate, the DPP's Office accepts the central premise of the court that the State failed to prove the manner of driving was dangerous in the circumstances.
