It has been revealed today that the Fiji Sports Commission may assist the Fiji Rugby Union with $300,000 for national sevens coach Ben Ryan’s salary and other issues for this year.
Sports Commission Chairman Peter Mazey said the package includes his accommodation and insurance.
Mazey added they are not responsible for Ryan’s funding for last year as FRU and the IRB are responsible for this.
Fijivillage understands that Ben Ryan has not been paid since he started work with FRU.
We are trying to get comments from FRU Acting CEO Dr Berlin Kafoa on the issue who was in a meeting from this morning.
Last year the FRU applied for funding under the “Engagement of Overseas Coaches Program” where government allocated $2 million for this year.
The program will enable local sporting bodies to recruit international coaches to help develop Fijian athletes and improve Fiji’s international and regional rankings.
