The Ministry of Fisheries has advised people that they should be aware of the fish they eat as some fish are deemed to be poisonous at this time of the year.
According to the Fisheries Department fish like Barracuda, Grouper, Red Snapper, Moray eel, Amberjack and sea bass are the species that are deemed to be poisonous.
These fish live in coral reef waters and Ciguatera toxin, a type of fish poisoning, tends to accumulate in predator fish such as the barracuda and other carnivorous reef fish, because they eat other fish that consume toxin producing algae that live in coral reef waters.
This toxin is heat resistant and cooking does not destroy the toxin.
The advice comes after a 21 year old woman of Lakeba died after she ate fish which was poisonous.
