The shipping fares and freight charges have now come under price control.
As of 1st July this year, it will be strictly monitored by the Fiji Commerce Commission with the support of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
Permanent Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport Francis Kean said it is noted that during the peak periods, particularly during the holidays and the Christmas break, there are hikes in these fares.
Kean added that the traveling public can look forward to some uniformity in the pricing of their fares when they do travel on some of the ships to the islands.
He said after three years of consultations, assessments and analysis by the Commerce Commission, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport Technical Working Group, they have made the recommendation to the Minister seeking Cabinet’s endorsement.
On 28th April, Cabinet endorsed the report on the outcome of consultations on the review of shipping fares and freight charges for the maritime shipping industry in Fiji.
He added a schedule of the new shipping fares and freight rates will be made available to the general public by the Fiji Commerce Commission through the relevant Price Control Order.
