The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme said it plans to take direct action to assist Tokelau and Tuvalu with their state of emergency over water supplies.
A long drought blamed on a La Nina weather pattern is causing water to run dry in parts of the South Pacific and Tuvalu and Tokelau have both declared states of emergency due to severe shortages.
Director General David Sheppard said the aid programme is designed to increase long term water storage and increase water conservation in the islands.
In Tuvalu a community water reservoir is being built, taking into account sea water proximity and climate forecasts so that it will be resilient to surges and strong tides.
Meanwhile, Fiji’s Health Ministry also has a team of specialists and medicine on standby for assistance.
