We can’t have rubbish dumps of convenience and rubbish should be disposed where it’s supposed to be disposed.

Minister for Health Rosy Akbar had this to say about littering in Fiji.

Akbar says the Rural Authority team, headed by the Chief Health Inspector will be going out to see where people have suddenly made convenient rubbish dumps.

She says rubbish should not be dumped anywhere just for peoples’ convenience and civic pride should prevail.

When questioned by Fijivillage on whether litter laws should be toughened up Akbar says with the way things are going, she believes it is time laws should be made tougher.

She says where and how it should be done is something the authorities should look into.

Akbar says the Vatuwaqa Industrial area is an area that disappoints her because of the rubbish.

She says after a heavy rainfall there is so much rubbish that accumulates in creeks.

The Minister says the Health Ministry is working to raise awareness on Dengue because rubbish that accumulates water which is a breeding ground for mosquitos.

Akbar says since we are in the rainy season the prospect of Dengue cases is higher during rainy season.

She says disposing of rubbish responsibly, can assist in curbing Dengue.
