Interim Ministers in the current cabinet will be asked to hand in their resignation letters within the next few months if they want to contest the general elections in March 2009.
Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama has confirmed in an exclusive interview with Village News today that he will not allow any interim ministers to be part of cabinet until the next elections if they wish to stand for elections.
He said that he has based his decision on the fact that the interim government ministers appointed in 2000 took advantage of their positions and campaigned for the 2001 elections using tax dollars.
Village News is yet to receive confirmation on which interim ministers will contest the next elections.
Interim Minister for Social Welfare Adi Laufitu Malani has clarified that she will not be contesting the elections in 2009 while the Interim Minister for Youth and Sports, Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi has refused to reveal whether he will contest or not.
The other Interim ministers are yet to comment on the issue.
