Reddy Helps Convict Rwanda Genocide Mastermind

Former Opposition and NFP Leader Jai Ram Reddy is one of three judges of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda who has convicted the "mastermind" of the Rwanda genocide and sentenced him to life in prison for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

It is the first time the tribunal has convicted high level officials for the 100 day genocide in 1994 which left an estimated 800,000 people dead.

67-year-old Theoneste Bagosora, a colonel in the Rwanda army was found guilty along with two other men and all were sent to life in prison.

Bagosora and two others were found by the UN Tribunal to have led a committee that plotted the massacre of ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus.

Before being a member of the UN Tribunal, Reddy was Fiji's leader of Opposition and Leader of the National Federation Party was President of the Fiji Court of Appeal briefly in 2000, 2002 and 2003.

On 31st January 2003, the UN General Assembly appointed him a member of the ICTR which is responsible for the prosecution of war crimes.
