Raiwai women’s club leads cleanup initiative to tackle litter

The women’s club of Raj Moti Lal Street in Raiwai has undertaken a cleanup initiative on Nairai Road, McFarlane Street, and Kia Street, addressing the accumulation of rubbish that has been dumped along these streets for months.

While speaking to fijivillage News, Meri Cukoto says this initiative is funded by an NGO called Jobs for Nature, which promotes keeping the environment clean.

Cukoto says their efforts go beyond simply picking up rubbish as they also clean the drains.

She says their task involves sorting the rubbish, packing it into sacks, and waiting for the Suva City Council to collect it.

The 44-year-old says the SCC always come later in the day to collect the trash.

Cukoto also highlighted that this project demonstrates their commitment to caring for their surroundings.

She adds they dedicate three hours from Monday to Friday for this cleanup effort.

Cukoto says they are urging the public to be mindful of waste disposal, ensuring that rubbish is placed in garbage bags and properly placed at designated sites.
