Positive signs for Fiji as tariff talks continue ahead of extended August 1 deadline
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad

As U.S. President Donald Trump's deadline for increased tariffs has been extended, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, says discussions with their counterparts look positive.

Trump had imposed a 32 percent tariff on Fijian exports, but an extension was granted to all affected countries until today, which has now been extended to August 1st.

While speaking to fijivillage News, Professor Prasad says Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica and Permanent Secretary Shaheen Ali have been deeply engaged with U.S. officials and counterparts to guide Fiji on how to reach an agreement or understanding that would be mutually beneficial to both the U.S. and Fiji.

He says the actual detailed agreement may not be possible in the short term, but they are looking at a more general understanding that would be positively beneficial to Fiji and also meet the requirements of the U.S.
