Police record 14% decrease in crimes and 1% reduction in serious crimes so far this year

The Fiji Police Force has recorded an overall decrease in crime by 14 percent, and a 1 percent reduction in serious crimes when compared to the same period last year.

This was revealed by the Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu who says the majority of the cases are from unlawful possession of illicit drugs followed by unlawful cultivation of illicit drugs.

He says marijuana continues to dominate the type of drugs seized in all 5 divisions, and now nearing almost 5 tonnes, while white drugs are also being seized in all 5 divisions.

He adds during this period the Police have noted a decrease in the number of marijuana cases, however, they continue to deploy officers to known areas to conduct more powerful exercises as well as for community policy.

Tudravu says a tough approach to tackling the supply chain is proving to be effective.

Tudravu further says five police officers were charged with a range of offences including damaging property, giving false information to public servants, criminal intimidation, proceeds of crime, unlawful possession, unlawful importation, and unlawful supply of illicit drugs.

He says in another incident, an officer was charged with forgery and general dishonesty in obtaining a gain.

The Commissioner adds there are 48 cases where police officers were victims of serious assault and resisting arrest.
