Some parents should be penalised for negligence, perhaps then more parents will take responsibility and ensure they know where their children are.
A concerned parent highlighted this during the Education Act 1966 review consultation held in Lautoka.
She says that parents must be held legally accountable when they fail in their duties.
She says this is because when there is lack of love, care and attention, children start engaging themselves in illegal activities, including drug.
The parent stresses that discipline starts at home and that children's behaviour often reflects the quality of their upbringing.
While responding to her concerns, a Ministry of Education representative clarified that the law recognises two types of negligence frameworks.
He says that under the Crimes Act 2009, parents can be held accountable if a child suffers harm, such as in cases of accidents or starvation due to neglect.
The representative says the Child Care and Protection Act 2024 addresses other forms of parental negligence, including failure to discipline a child or meet other parental responsibilities.
He adds that cases of child neglect or abuse can be referred to the Director of the Department of Social Welfare, who can then provide the necessary care and support.
