PM announces Public Holiday on 22nd August
Fiji 7s team with their Gold Medals.

As the historic Olympic gold medal victory celebrations continue, Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama has confirmed to Fijivillage from Rio that we will have a public holiday for Fiji's memorable win.

Bainimarama has confirmed that the public holiday will be on Monday 22nd August.

Team Fiji arrives in the country on Sunday 21st August.

Meanwhile Reuters has reported that Bainimarama attended every day of the three‑day competition, shunning the VIP area to sit with Fijian fans in the stands.

Bainimarama says he knows that everyone is celebrating back home and people have been celebrating for the last three days.

He says celebrations have been planned for the team when they return home.

Bainimarama says we are all proud to be Fijians right now.

Bainimarama said the inclusion of rugby in the Olympics this year for the first time since 1924 had "propped up" smaller nations like Fiji.

Referring to Fiji's previous rugby triumphs, including back‑to‑back wins at the world series in the last two years, he said: "They were not like this one, this is the Olympics."

He also hinted there would be rewards for Fiji's players and British coach Ben Ryan but hoped Fiji would soon get back to work after the appropriate amount of celebrating.
